Burgos: The Founding Families and Their Descendants
Last Names of Nuevo Leon

In this blog post, you will find more information about my book "Burgos: The Founding Families and Their Descendants". You will also find a list of the founding families.

Burgos, Tamaulipas was founded on February 20, 1749, by Jose de Escandon. On July 5, 1750, a census was conducted and 33 families are listed including single men. It also contains 12 families of the Captain and Soldiers in charge of protecting them. This book is about those 45 families and their descendants.

This book contains 43 chapters, one for each family or males listed as single. Two seem to be repeated in the settlers list and the soldiers list so they were only included once.

Most of these families came from El Valle del Pilon (Montemorelos), El Guaxuco (Santiago), Monterrey, Cadereyta, and Linares. One came from Villa de Lagos, another one from Guanajuato, and another from Saltillo. We also find one that came from San Fernando another villa that was also recently stablished by Jose de Escandon.

The first twelve chapters are for the Captain and Soldiers of Burgos. The other 33 are for the settlers listed in the census record. I used the 1753 census and the 1757 census, as well as church baptism, death, and marriage records to recreate the family groups. I was able to connect many to families of El Nuevo Reyno de Leon and thus each chapter contains a chart listing the parents of the couple to which each chapter is dedicated. For many I could not find parents and I still added the chart with blank boxes.

  1. Sir, Will I get as good information from your villas del Norte as i could get from ancestry? I can not afford both subscriptions. thank you.
    respectfully Alcadia Fairman

    1. Hello Alcadia, Ancestry is totally different than Las Villas del Norte. Las Villas del Norte is more like a genealogy society but on a digital platform and its main focus is education. A bonus of joinig is access to our over one million name database focusing on Northeastern Mexico and South Texas.
