1678 Death Record of Melchor Barrera
Last Names of Nuevo Leon

This is the January 13, 1678 death record my 9th great-grandfather of Melchor Barrera who died in what is now Monterrey, Nuevo Leon.

I am a descendant of his through his son Nicolas who is mentioned as being his executor.

From his will dated December 29, 1677 we know that he was born in San Vicente, Castilla, Spain and from other records we know that he was born in about the year 1600.

The will mentions that his parents are Juan Barrera and Beatriz Rodriguez.

He was in Nuevo Leon by the 1640s and married Mariana de Treviño, also known as Mariana Navarro, the daughter of Alonzo de Trevino and Anastacia Gonzalez Hidalgo Navarro.

Above is the image of his death record and below is the transcription of it.

If he is also one of your ancestors please let me know how you are related to him in the comments of this blog post.

In case you may be interested here is a copy of his signature. It is interesting to note that he abbreviated his first name. It appears exactly the same in the various signatures that I have found for him.

  3. This site is great. I’ve only just begun exploring my Canary Islander, Mexican, Spanish and Indigenous roots. I descend from Maria Vicente Perez. Her parents Matias Casanova and Juana Luisa de Vargas. I’m trying to find out who Juana’s parents are…I’m also trying to find out which of my ancestors may be buried at Campos Santo. Appreciate your work on our ancestry cousin.
